What is Super Visa Insurance?

The Parent and Grandparent Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit Canada for extended stays of up to 5 years per entry. To qualify, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires applicants to have private emergency medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company for at least one year.

Super Visa insurance provides the emergency medical coverage that meets this requirement, protecting your visiting family members from unexpected medical costs during their stay in Canada — costs that provincial health plans typically do not cover for visitors.

Coverage Details

Understanding the key aspects of Super Visa insurance helps you choose the right plan for your family.

Eligibility

Available for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The visitor must meet IRCC's Super Visa requirements, which include an invitation letter, financial support undertaking, and proof of medical insurance.

Policy Durations

Coverage is available for 365 days (the minimum required by IRCC), with options to extend for longer stays. Some plans offer coverage for up to 2 years.

Payment Arrangements

Choose between a single upfront payment or monthly installments. Monthly plans can make coverage more manageable for families on a budget.

Benefits

Emergency medical expenses, hospitalization, ambulance services, repatriation, and family escort. Some plans include coverage for stable pre-existing conditions.

Exclusions

Non-emergency care, routine check-ups, and non-stable pre-existing conditions may be excluded. Coverage terms vary by insurer and plan — always review the policy wording carefully.

Refund Conditions

Most policies refund the premium if the Super Visa application is refused, subject to the insurer's terms. Some plans also offer pro-rated refunds for early departure.
